We have have recently split from our parent company and are now an independent company with a brand new website.

The parent company has a very authorative site and (being new) we have none. We are getting our pages on the parent company site redirected to our new website. Product pages are getting a direct 301, but some of the higher level pages will have some explanatory text and then a link to click to the new website.

The parent wants to have all our existing high-level menu items redirected to a single page that explains that we are now independent and includes a selection of links to our new (high-level) pages. (basically 20 pages -> 1 page -> 20 links).

We wanted each high level page to have an individual description of the de-merger, and a link directly to the corresponding page on our site (1 page -> 1 link).

Does anyone know which of these methods would give us the best link juice from the parent company site?

Hope that is clear.

@Pope3001725

Yes, you can have a domain name purchased with a registrar and have the site hosted somewhere else. Registration and hosting are 2 different things, and most hosting companies are not registrars; they deal with another company to purchase their domain names.

What a domain name does is to say "website a.com" = "IP 123.123.123.12".

How do I go about doing this? Can I leave the domain with whois and just make it send visitors to my normal hosting provider without the url changing?

On whois, you'll have to configure the DNS so that the domain name points to your hosting server.

Or do I have to transfer it and if so how long does that take?

You can transfer it, but it depends on the situation. If whois is cheaper and you don't mind managing both accounts, then you can keep both.

If I take GoDaddy as an example as they are both a hosting company and a registrar, when you transfer a domain name to them they will add a year of the domain name at their price, then continue to renew it at their price for the following years.

Transfering hosting and transfering a domain name are 2 separate things.

However, it shows up at second place on Google for the keyword "microsoft", second only to the official Microsoft homepage. How/why does Google give the Microsoft's twitter page such a high ranking without it having many backlinks?

SSL Certificate is a wildcard
Only the non https version of the subdomain loads
HTTPS request forfor the subdomain redirects to the parent domain

This sounds like a vhost configuration issue on the server. Chances are your webserver is missing a vhost for the SSL version of the subdomain.

Check to make sure there is vhost entry for subdomain on port 443, similar to the one for the primary domain.
Once the vhost is added, make sure it is also enabled (if Apache2). You can find an example tutorial of setting one up in this blog post.
If you just added a vhost and enabled it, or just updated an existing one, you'll also need to restart Apache for settings to kick-in.

@Pope3001725

Per LinkedIn's Share on LinkedIn documentation, the "Source" is supposed to represent the source of the content (e.g. your website or application name). That said, it may block/prohibit a url as a value (but I doubt that). There's a couple possible reasons why the source information isn't being populated from AddThis' side.

1) AddThis platform's LinkedIn Share button code is looking for a setting/attribute from your AddThis account where you setup the button. You may need to register the domain in AddThis where you configured the button.

2) AddThis code is looking for missing metatag data. Try adding metatags in your site-wide templates for the application-name, author, creator, and publisher. Refer to developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Element/meta
If both of those approaches hit a dead-end, I'd recommend you submit a help ticket with AddThis. Their developer / API documentation doesn't provide much insight on how they determine/populate the source parameter for the share link.

@Pope3001725

As you've observed, Bing respects/crawls both RSS and xml sitemaps for indexing and doesn't really distinguish the two formats for priority.

You could add a priority ranking/value to the rss feed urls in your xml sitemap so that Bing's bots don't crawl them with such precedence.
Refer to the Sitemap XML Format standards for an example with priority setting, and more about XML attributes for your listed pages.
Per Bing's Sitemap Best Practices blog post,

be sure you've doublechecked/set properties and attributes in your RSS feed to help ensure how they are interpreted.
minimize the number of RSS feeds on your site/consolidate them and show more than just the 10 most recent posts when applicable.

If you absolutely need to prevent Bing from crawling your rss feed and indexing based on it, you could consider blocking the rss feeds from the Bing crawler in robots.txt, but I wouldn't recommend it. Instead- just configure your XML Sitemap to be submitted regularly (either daily, a few times a week, or weekly) to the search engines.

It sounds like your company site is built on WordPress, is that correct? In itself it is a content management system. You can investigate the WordPress communities for code to help automate your publishing. Blog entries will be stored in your WordPress database (wherever your company site is hosted), along with your other content, images, etc. You can also investigate plugins for document management, SEO and the like.

As for your SEO question: your content needs to be optimized for SEO with appropriate keywords, titles and meta-descriptions. In my opinion, that is more important than if it is on a subdomain or not. I've used the Yoast SEO plugin on WordPress and it is great for helping you tune your content for SEO -- right down to featured images and checking the length and reading level of your posts.

With the plugin enabled, your site can send emails "officially" through an SMTP enabled mail account, even it is one created in CPanel on your hosting provider. The advantage to sending via SMTP and not directly through phpmail or sendmail is mitigating the likelihood of your messages being flagged as spam (sometimes because the shared server IPs being blacklisted, other times because of overridden email headers).

itemprop="name" (typically on an H1) wrapping the individual question
itemprop="acceptedAnswer" itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/Answer" on the DOM element wrapping the accepted answer

Buying and redirecting or developing expired domains with no previous history or backlink profile is not going to work every time as not all expired domains lead to tangible profit and page one search rankings. However, there are occasional domains that have a large backlink profiles.

You could approach this from 2 angles.

SEO: make sure you have high quality keywords (long tail ones may help you appear higher in search results) on all pages. Make sure your images have alt text with an appropriate keyword in it, as well as titles that have some bearing on the image. Boots_women143.jpg is better for SEO than K84639t.jpg. Complete a good meta-description for each page. Your page titles need to contain the keyword for that page. All of these will improve your SEO.
In terms of optimizing performance: optimize your images, use responsive images to improve loading on any platform. Ensure your images are of high enough quality while not wasting bandwidth. Be able to load an image of appropriate size and quality for the browser/device/bandwidth combination of the user. I think the lazy loading is a good idea. And depending on how your site is formatted, perhaps you could load thumbnails in the infinite scroll and save larger images for the product page.

@Pope3001725

First, most sites are moving to exclusively https, so Wordpress concentrates on that.
Secondly, the method will be different depending on if you are on a Wordpress.com site or using Wordpress on another hosting platform or if you built the site yourself with Wordpress.org.

Now, if you are on Wordpress.com, then I would suggest contacting their support staff. There are odd limitations when using that platform that do not always apply with other Wordpress websites. They may have plugins, I do not know.

If you used Wordpress.org, you can look for plugins or try adding both http & https to your wp-config.php file. Here's an example from blog.rabin.io:

function isSecure() {
return
(!empty($_SERVER['HTTPS']) && $_SERVER['HTTPS'] !== 'off')
|| $_SERVER['SERVER_PORT'] == 443;
}

$web_site = 'blog.rabin.io';
$schema = isSecure() ? 'https://' : 'http://';
$web_site_url = $schema . $web_site;

define('WP_HOME', $web_site_url);
define('WP_SITEURL', $web_site_url);

(No, I have not tested this.)

Then if you wanted to you would have to force SSL for the page(s) you want with this (example for login & admin):

define( 'FORCE_SSL_LOGIN', true );
define( 'FORCE_SSL_ADMIN', true );

For a Wordpress site on another hosting platform, I suspect there are plugins for that. Depending on the hoster, you may be able to modify your wp-config yourself.

@Pope3001725

Google changes their algorithms frequently, so I think it's impossible to "exactly" tune any site. SEO research says that users take 2-3 seconds for a site to load something useful and then they click away. So the answer to your question is really "whatever it takes to deliver useful content to the user quickly.

And Wordpress has their own overhead and peculiarities, depending on theme, if you are using your own server with Wordpress.org, a hosted site with Wordpress or a Wordpress.com site.

It may be useful to think of it as what is the intention of your site? If you are blogging or an online store or a photo gallery all require different optimization to respond at the best speed. When you analyze your site where are the bottlenecks: server, Internet connection, poorly optimized content? Tweak your site, configurations and SEO tactics to meet the purpose of your website. Serve your pages as efficiently as you can (and as quickly for those impatient users.)

SEO tactics vary, but you can do a lot to help your ranking and search "grade" by effective use of keywords (including in image titles/alt text), good meta descriptions and getting high quality backlinks. Getting more sites to link to your site is a solid way to increase your SEO rankings.

You may want to approach this from a different angle if the goal is to have Google/Bing and other search engines index the individual files so they may appear in search results and help boost your site's SEO.

Having hyperlinks to the files helps- but you can probably get more attention by:

including valid schema markup around each file. Refer to schema.org/docs/gs.html See the schema types available.
saving the files with metadata when possible. For pdfs being created in Acrobat, see: helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/pdf-properties-metadata.html Most documents/files can have metadata assigned from the "properties" option in the application used to create them. A campaign for Blade Runner 2049 movie would therefore have the following keywords:

"Blade Runner 2049" 2017 "movie times"
"Blade Runner 2049" 2017 "movie showtimes"

"Blade Runner 2049" 2017 +cineworld
"Blade Runner 2049" 2017 +showtimes

The problem is that google-adwords ignores all of these keywords with an error:

People don't search for this term very often, so it's not eligible to show your ads.

@Pope3001725

Posted in: #EnhancedEcommerce #GoogleAnalytics

I want to integrate GA Enhanced Analytics (GEA) to GO2CINEMA.

GO2CINEMA lists movie showtimes and allows to purchase cinema tickets. I am using GO2CINEMA as an example, however the same problem applies to any event ticketing site.

The problem I am facing is that GEA product data fields do not translate well to ephemeral/ time- and geospecific products:

id text Yes* The product ID or SKU (e.g. P67890). *Either this field or name must be set.
name text Yes* The name of the product (e.g. Android T-Shirt). *Either this field or id must be set.
brand text No The brand associated with the product (e.g. Google).
category text No The category to which the product belongs (e.g. Apparel). Use / as a delimiter to specify up to 5-levels of hierarchy (e.g. Apparel/Men/T-Shirts).
variant text No The variant of the product (e.g. Black).
price currency No The price of a product (e.g. 29.20).
quantity integer No The quantity of a product (e.g. 2).
coupon text No The coupon code associated with a product (e.g. SUMMER_SALE13).
position integer No The product's position in a list or collection (e.g. 2).

"product" ID has little relevance when the product (specific event ticket) is not going to exist more than couple of days.

In the context of GO2CINEMA, a event has the following key information associated with it:

ID
datetime
movie information
cinema and venue information
screening attributes [3D, IMAX, etc]
price

Also, important metrics are:

Relative time until the event (e.g. event starts in 30 minutes)
Relative distance to the venue (e.g. venue is 500 meters away)

I was thinking of using:

"category" to capture week/ day time, e.g. "{Sunday, Monday, ..}/{Morning, Afternoon, Evening}/{Starting in less than 1 hour, Starting in less than 3 hours, ...}"
"brand" to capture the cinema/ venue, e.g. "Odeon/Leicester Square" (though it looks like "/" does not achieve the same result as category)

However, this still leaves out the relative distance, price and movie.

How does one incorporate all of this information in a meaningful way?
