Let's say I have a smart object at the top-left corner of my picture, as shown in the first capture:

If I replace the content of this smart object (right click > Replace Contents…) with an image that doesn't have the same proportions than the original one, the smart object is resized from the center, as shown in the second capture:

Question: is there a way to specify the anchor point from which the smart object will resize when replacing its content?

@Marchetta832

You want to select all the lines and Expand them.

Go to Object → Expand, you only need to select Stroke.

This will convert your strokes to paths (fixing that mistake which is caused by the computer auto selecting an area to fill)

Then you can use the Pathfinder (Window → Pathfinder or Ctrl/Command+Shift+F9) to cut them through.

You can also do Object → Path → Outline Stroke which does the same thing (in your scenario)

 query : Re: How to make realistic shadows in composites? Currently I'm practising doing compositing combining different photos to make them look like taken as a single picture. I find it quite difficult.

@Marchetta832

Like this, probably have to clean some of the rocks up too.

It's like magic...

It also good to tie shadows together, so here I tie her shadow to the shadow at the lower right corner, it directs your attention around the image and makes if feel more anchored.

The three big rocks on the left should be shaded on the opposite side they are now, and a few other minor tone issues (like the bright spot on the big rock in the lower right), that I will leave for you.

I think the biggest problem you have right now, besides the direction, is the falloff. Think like a beam of light, it doesn't get more dense the further from the light source, it radiates out and weakens as an inverse square, double the distance quarter the power (like gravity too). This is because it's spherical and the surface of a sphere is 4πr^2, basically inverse square happens because of the relation to volume and area of a sphere. But shadows are a phenomenon of light (or lack of light) so much like the light they tend to widen and dissipate over distances. I mention this because to do light effects (realistically) you have to know how light works.

There is a lot of geometry in light and shadow, I mean the Greeks basically calculated the circumference of earth just using shadows and geometry.

So with the one you have it seems to get narrower and maintains it's darkness even wen moving away from the source. The one I did is sort of like a cone with the point cut off at her feet. So there is some falloff to the sides, it doesn't lighten so much as it moves away, but this is because it blends into the shadows at the corner.

Just for reference

The rocks are a bit harder to fix, if I had the original of them without the vignette adding shading, I would vertically mirror the ones on the left and then patch the seam, that way their shadows would be on the left and not the right. But with that extra shading by the vignette effect, it would take more time then I care to spend.

Also the lettering looks a bit to "Fuzzy" for my taste...

Hope that helps.

With the Pen Tool (Click P to use it) to draw the outlines of the shapes

For every block there are 3 shapes - each with a slightly different/darker shading (for photo realism).

So you would need to draw out all your blocks (in 3 parts each)

Then add a Gradient to each of the parts.

 query : How to bend a path along an arc (or any shaped path)? TL:DR How can I bend a shape along a path in illustrator I've been wondering for a while how I can do this, when I saw this

@Marchetta832

TL:DR

How can I bend a shape along a path in illustrator

I've been wondering for a while how I can do this, when I saw this question, I got very excited.

Inkscape: Bend a vector along a circular arc

But the methods provided seem to be just for Inkscape.

I'm looking for a way to do this in Illustrator:

Edit:

{This is just an example shape,I don't actually want it in this shape or curve - in Inkscape it's pertty simple, just bend on curve, I'm looking for a similar feature in illustrator}

I have (a group of) shapes and I want it curved along the - - - - - - line:

(Really just any path to my customization, just an example)

Or these shapes:

I want them to "warp" all the way around the circle (to make a complete star-ish)

This was the best I could get using Object→Envelope Distort→Make with Warp (Alt+Shift+Ctrl+W):

It is clearly not the desired effect, it needs to be dragged in further (and more consistently across the entire shape)

Note: This can easily be done with text: (just use the type on path tool)

I'm looking for a way to do it with standard shapes/paths. I do not want to make a brush (unless it's my only option).

Why you ask?

If it's a brush, I have to make it beforehand manually (I can't just choose an item and bend it to X path - which I can do in Inkscape.) With a brush, the benefit would be to be able to have full control over the curves, but at a cost of extra time and effort, so sometimes I just want the computer to do it's thing

Export the scene file as fbx and import the fbx into the other application.

I use Maya 2017 to export my scene into a FBX file. Then I try to import this FBX file into 3ds max 2014. In 3ds max 2014, I have tried both "Autodesk Media & Entertainment" & "Autodesk Architectural (Revit)" import preset, but after the import process done (I see no error), I see nothing in the scene - like nothing ever get imported.

I have tried to import this same FBX file into Maya 2017, and everything work fine. So I guess this must be 3ds max 2014 fault.

Note: If I use Obj file instead of Fbx file, then 3ds max 2014 can import and see the model, but the animation just not get imported.

Nailed it.

The issue is most probably with the lines in your icon. When you're resizing the symbol in Sketch, it's not scaling the stroke width, so you end up with a huge stroke on a tiny icon, and then trouble happens.

What you can do is - convert all lines to outlines. To do that - select each line and use Layer/Convert to Outlines.

This way, when scaling, Sketch will behave. I am also attaching a Sketch file with the difference I'm getting. Sketch file

A clipping mask rectangle that is 50px in height is showing a region of a gradient 5000px rectangle, as seen in the image.

I want the user to see the same color, or at least not notice the difference, of a gradient, through the window.
It'll be a linear gradient from red to black.
The clipping mask height will remain 50px and I cannot change that.
The height of the gradient rectangle is the only thing that can change.

I know that at 5000px, the user will see the same exact color value every 50px (correct me if I'm wrong). However, I want to shorten the height of the gradient rectangle from 5000px down to whatever height it takes for the user to not notice the difference in color within the clipping mask rectangle.

@Marchetta832

If you want to convince your boss, I would run the test with your actual clients. You don't know how the test determines what is enough contrast and your boss is likely worried about usability.

Without regards to how you should deal with this in your workplace, strictly in terms of design, I think you need to have a middle ground.

There has been criticism of Apple's use of color in type, and not just by random folks, but Don Norman, the famous author of "The Design of Everyday Things" wrote about this in FastCo.

However, going all the way black is harsh on the eyes. There are sources online discussing this, like this one. Also, Jan Tschichold's Die Neue Typographie (a classic work about book design) advocates, if my memory doesn't fail me, to use 80% black on a more cream paper to lower the contrast and make reading more comfortable. In any case, it would be preferable to use a spot color to avoid halftone in your typography so that maye not always be possible. Especially in print (CMYK), black is sometimes the better way to go if you don't want to create a halftone color or registration problems.

Again, it also depends if you are dealing with a long text or just titles. You don't need to worry so much about making text comfortable to read if you're only applying color to titles.

Create an elliptical shape in Illustrator.
Rotate it by 137.5 degrees and copy it. (Also known as the Golden
Angle...this is key!)
Hit ctrl+d or cmd+d to duplicate until your shapes start to seem
thicker (that means you went too far so you can undo until you have
a nice, uniform texture).
Cover the center with a circle. Go on with recreating the

 query : Re: Sketch plugin to use images for borders? I was looking around for a while, but can't find a solution for this. Essentially, I want to use an image for the border of a square, to ensure

@Marchetta832

Absolutely, there's a way to do this in Sketch. The plugin you're looking for is Anima's Auto Layout (Recently packaged as LaunchPad) www.animaapp.com/

If you don't want to read and do it yourself, grab the final result Sketch file HERE. You need to have the plugin installed for it to work.

The setup is weird the first time around, but it's logical and once you get the hang of it, you'll get a lifetime of coolness ahead ;)
let's dive into it:

Make a square rectangle (20x20 in your case) on the top left corner of your frame (position it so it doesn't overlap with where your image will be).

copy/paste the image on top of your rectangle, group the rectangle and the image duplicate, set the rectangle as a mask.

Remove the color/border from the rectangle, name the folder by it's "real" name (top left), and convert the group to symbol. It should now appear in the Symbols page in your Sketch file.

REPEAT for all corners, then all sides (process is the same - you will create top, bottom, left, right symbols. Note: The symbols should also automatically remain on the initial screen (Page 1)

On Page1, select all the symbols you created, and create a new symbol with the selection. The result should look something like this (that's in the symbols page):

Fun starts here. Open up the Auto Layout (Launchpad) plugin (opens on the bottom right part of the sketch screen). In the "Symbols" page, in the last symbol you created (I called it "frame"), select the "top" nested symbol, like so:

As shown on the image, "Pin" the symbol to the top, left and right. You don't need to change anything else.

Select the top right corner. Make sure you "Pin" it in the plugin to the top and right corners. Don't change anything else.

REPEAT for each corner and side.
Go back to your main design screen (Page 1 by default), and try resizing your new symbol. Magic.

Resize to the needed size and place photos underneath the layer.

@Marchetta832

You would need to have two fonts, set both fonts up in the way shown above then select each of the thicker text layers.

After doing so you should get your either same background or different coloured backgrounds.

Now, select the text layer go onto the background layer. Press Ctrl+Shift+I, this should select the background leaving you with text with a background fill. If you cannot find a background, or dont want to follow this you dont have too as you can always synthetically create this effect, but I personally wouldnt as my method is much easier and takes much less time.

But if you wanted to create that EXACT effect I would add transparent smoke effect (or create your own) over the top within the same effect.

Just to warn you if you are following my method and are going to use the composition commercially then you will have to check which images you use as some of these images could be copyrighted.
