 query : Re: How long are designers expected to keep client files? A client recently emailed me asking for the source files from a project I did for them two years ago. I don't have the source files since

@Deb5748823

Well, since I'm quite proud of most the work I do for a client, I do NOT keep those files for them, but for my self.

While is useful to keep them saved given that an old client could ask for changes after months of completed the project.

I don't see any reason to DELETE the files, unless you really hated that project and you don't want to know anything about it anymore, but even in those cases, I like to keep those files as an story of my work, I can always go back to those files and see how much I have grown as designer.

Even my own personal designs are always stored. And data storage is WAY too cheap now, so there is no excuse to delete them.

Import the animated GIF in Photoshop using File > Import > Video Frames to Layers.

In the dialog box that opens after, you will be able to select the option "Limit To Every x Frames", thus reducing the frame rate and the file size.

@Deb5748823

Had the same problem - supplied with a pdf apparently made in InDesign, roughly 5Mb in size, which needed some editing. Opened in Illustrator (we use CS6), made a small change, re-saved and was amazed to see a new pdf file size of over 60Mb. Eventually solved the problem by opening the large pdf in Acrobat, then saving as an 'optimised pdf' with image compression set to 300dpi not 72dpi. Worked a treat - back to a few Mb in size with no loss of resolution.

Hope this helps someone.

Might also help to post the SVG code so we can see for ourselves although Jake Archibald's SVGOMG (which you mentioned) is pretty good and is my go-to.

Personally, I'd be quite happy if I was able to shrink that SVG from 6KB to 4KB and I don't think you'll be able to compress/optimise it much further without starting to lose detail.

Also be aware that there are settings in the SVGOMG GUI you can play around with to achieve a smaller size WHILE getting a live preview of how it would/will look.

EDIT

So I noticed you've added the SVG code for us to have a better look on how to optimize.

After lowering the precision on SVGOMG I managed to get the file to 1.37KB with a total saving of 0.03KB! Although someone else pointed out you could re-use the clip path of the glasses lens to potentially save even more bytes when you re-use it in the svg with /

@Deb5748823

I have found a way to make this happen using Actions, via this post over on the Adobe forums:

start recording a new Action
invoke the Transform command (Edit > Free Transform)
Enter a transformation percentage in the Width and Height boxes in the Options Bar, such as 110% to enlarge the layer by 10%
Hit return to accept the transformation
Stop recording the Action
Assign the action a keyboard shortcut (such as Cmd-1) via the Actions Options menu item in the Actions panel fly-out menu

Repeat this to scale down, using 90% in the percentage fields, and a similar keyboard shortcut.

 query : Re: Search for string and delete entire text frame with JavaScript for Illustrator I can delete a layer by name: var myDoc = app.activeDocument; var myLayers = myDoc.layers; var

@Deb5748823

This will do it so long as there is a consistent piece of text to search for. Can be applied to an action and batched.

Notice that it loops in reverse order. This is a common strategy whenever looping items that will get removed from the array. Otherwise, the shortening array length will interfere with future cycles through the loop.

In using the match method, you can see if a string is anywhere within the contents.

The match method will also accept a RegExp object (regular expression). This will be useful if your find text changes slightly but follows a pattern.

var doc, texts, i, count, find;

find = "MyString"; // Replace with your own string

doc = activeDocument;
texts = doc.textFrames;
count = texts.length;
for (i=count-1; i>0; i--)
{ if (texts[i].contents.match (find) == find)
{ texts[i].remove ();
}

@Deb5748823

Perhaps the quickest way to get a portfolio up and running is with Wordpress. Wordpress is usually supported well by hosting companies, meaning that you can set up a Wordpress site with just a few clicks.

For more on this just Google for something like "setting up Wordpress site". You should find plenty of options.

Don't use Wordpress' offer to host your blog for free, last I checked you can only use some limited amount of themes on their site.

You'll have to search on Google for "free wordpress portfolio themes", there are many available. Pick one you like, set it on your Wordpress instance, and fill it up with your work.

Get a paid host, they're cheap (around /mo). Read reviews about the host you're considering to buy first, to see others' opinion of them. You'll also want to pick a professional-sounding domain name that's to represent your business. Your name works ok, if the domain is available. Aside from ".com" there's also ".studio" and ".design" which come relatively cheap (they're paid yearly).

Look into "SEO" to make sure you're pairing your work with relevant descriptions on your portfolio, so that your work has a chance to come up when people search Google for related keywords.

Good luck!

If you are going to use a picture of a famous building, I suggest looking at the place's website. They are likely to have rules about how pictures of the place can be used. Just because it's famous doesn't mean it is considered "public property." Taking a picture of someone's famous home may require the owner giving a property release.

An easier way to do it is to group together all your paths, select that group and your background shape, then go to pathfinder (Shift-Ctrl-F9) then under Shape Modes click "Exclude" (should be the 4th option).

Then your background square should have all the shapes cut out of it.

@Deb5748823

Posted in: #FontRecommendation #Typefaces #TypeTheory

Some time ago I had drawn attention to the font MS Mincho, namely
its Latin set. Same (or very close) Latin set is used also in SimSun font and some others with asian titles.

I have to say, I'm really astonished by the quality of letters and overall stroke balance. Especially I want to emphasize that I notice outstanding legibility of this font.
There is a monospaced version - Mincho, and a normal (proportional) version - PMincho.

Here are examples:

I personally find particular letters of Mincho (first line in the image)
are better crafted than in PMincho, such as e.g. bowls in "p", more prominent "r" and "i".
So in PMincho some of them became worse, namely "i" is
too narrow, and in general -- a bit too dense by default.
So, yes I am criticising PMincho for having some drawbacks.
(Please note that I am not talking about monospaced vs proportional,
but rather features of some letters. In the image, I have adjusted spacing of Mincho manually to make the comparison)

I became really curious, because this typeface seems to provide better
readability than any others I have seen before, particularly some features
of Mincho's letters, like I said.

It would be really interesting to know:

who is the designer of MS Mincho (Latin set)? Any sources, historical notes?
is this letter design (Mincho Latin) very original or derived from some very close brother?
if there are other types very close to Mincho, please make examples.
Namely exactly as Mincho, only with few letters adjusted (Mm, Ww).

Probably there is even a separate term for this typeface group?
I know that it is classic/roman group, but try googling "classic roman"!
One fairly similar font on my computer is Times New Roman, but with other stroke style and width.

@Deb5748823

Path connection nodes can only have 2 paths joined.

There is no 3 way, Y connection. Your little flame needs to be a complete path and your big flame needs to be a complete path.

The strokes can overlap so they appear to be one line at the bottom, in fact you can use the same little flame bottom piece to connect both flames so the bottoms will match exactly.

Create a folder for your JPGs.
Go back into Photoshop, open the Actions panel and create a new action.
Open up one of the PSD files and go through the motions of saving it as a JPG into that JPG folder you just created earlier.
After saving it, close your file (do not save) and Stop the Action.
Now that you have that action saved, you can go into Batch which is located here: File → Automate → Batch.

This method is good if you intend to do this often.

@Deb5748823

Posted in: #Copyright #Vector

I freelance, but I'm still green in some areas and Copyright is one of them. I know about using/purchasing stock and all that, I have accounts on all the stock sites, but I created a design, which resulted in some issues.The design had some copyrighted material and here's where I'm confused.

My design is complete vector based. I either made my own vector from an image, or I used a Photoshop brush. I was once told that a loophole with using images was that if you make a brush out of an image and create that image using a brush, it's considered a tool and there's technically no copyright. This could be wrong information, or maybe it doesn't apply to certain imagery. I downloaded a brush set that doesn't have any copyright restrictions attached to it and used that to create some of my images that are an issue. So my question is, if I create my own vector or use a brush of an image, let's say Mickey Mouse, could that still create copyright issues?

My next question is fonts. Can words be copyrighted? Some of the issues in my design were words and I understand the issue was probably related to the LOOK of the words, but if I find a font (one free font I found looked similar) can I use this without any issue?

Any help would be appreciated. I haven't had to worry about copyright before, until this project and it confuses me so much!

The tutorials and examples for Metallic buttons explain the process and give examples. However, none of them are as heavily shadowed, highlighted and saturated as your Starcraft examples. You will have to increase the effects, or just draw the buttons in a graphics program like Illustrator.

The emphasis is on subtlety in web design these days. You'll have to push the css rules to get it as loud as video game interface.

If you've based your PPTX on a blank master and put all the design elements onto the slides themselves, you'll need to transfer them to the slide master + layouts of your deck (better, a COPY of your deck), then remove them from the slides themselves.

There's a lot more to creating a USEFUL template than meets the eye, though. If you want to learn how to do a good job of it, look for a book called "Building PowerPoint Templates Step by Step with the Experts" by Echo Swinford and Julie Terberg. It's available on Amazon and other places.
