I am trying to understand the bounce rate concept in Google analytics.I have a blog focused on technical stuff (Java, Spring etc.) and getting a decent amount of traffic (just 6-7-month-old blog).

I have noticed high bounce rate in the GA dashboard (close to 85%), here are my thoughts on this and need help to understand it in more clear way

High bounce rate is happening on the organic traffic as people land on a very specific page and seems to exist from that page.
Since this is a technical blog and focused on specific problems, is it expected behavior that people land on a specific page and 85% exist from the same page.
Should I consider such a high bounce rate as a red flag?

Does it make any difference for Ajax method to be POST or GET?

Google's new webmaster tools has a section 'Index coverage'>'Excluded'>'Submitted URL not selected as canonical'. I am getting 3 internal links in the section "Submitted URL not selected as canonical" of my website.

am not sure why these internal links are showing up there. I had updated canonical tags for these 3 links. (I am not sharing links cause may be my account marked as spam)

Google's help page has some information about it, but doesn't say how to fix it:

Submitted URL not selected as canonical: The URL is one of a set of duplicate URLs without an explicitly marked canonical page. You explicitly asked this URL to be indexed, but because it is a duplicate, and Google thinks that another URL is a better candidate for canonical, Google did not index this URL. Instead, we indexed the canonical that we selected. The difference between this status and "Google chose different canonical than user" is that, in this case, you explicitly requested indexing.

So I have a site configured with example.com:80 and example.com:80, as well as a certificate for port 443.

When a user goes to the example.com:80 or 443, which has the SSL certificate configured correctly (the certificate is specifically for example.com, not example.com), everything is fine.

Additionally, if a user browses to domain.com:80, my application is able to redirect to example.com:443.

However, if the user types in "https://example.com", they force the load of the site, and the domain doesn't match the certificate. I'm not sure why URL Rewrite doesn't redirect in this case, since I put in "https://example.com" and it shows the correct test result.

Is there some other trick or method to get the redirect to work, or is it "impossible" because you cannot redirect across domains with the HTTPS protocol?

I am migrating one of my sites from HTTP to HTTPS. It is totally clear how to do things for my main myexampledomain.com, however I'm not sure some little details about migrating cdn.myexampledomain.com.

So what is the best way (from Google/SEO point of view) to 301 redirect my old http CDN links to the new https?

My first idea is to simply set it in the Amazon Cloudfront admin to force http to https. This way when Googlebot visits an old http link it will be redirected to the new one. While the previous version is for the already indexed links, I would also change the CDN links on the site to https.
After I did the 301 redirect, do I need anything else regarding to my CDN domain? Will Googlebot reindex the CDN links when detects the protocol change or it will be informed when I resubmit a sitemap for the main domain and indexes it again?
Can be an issue if the SSL cert of the main and cdn domain is different?

@Deb1703797

Having two URLs for same webpage is not a good practice. You must have shared the old URL somewhere on the internet, may be on social media, emails, comments and so on...

So when someone tries to access that URL, that is navigates through that URL they will see a error 404 page which is not a good sign in terms of SEO.

So if you want to utilize the full potential of the internet you better redirect the old URL to the new one. If you are a WordPress user, there are plug-ins for this.
Just install, activate redirect the old URL to the new one.

Benefits of doing this are

You get the link juice from the old URL from wherever the old link exists.
You can keep the traffic intact, even if you have to change the URL for quality or any purpose for that matter.
You are creating two separate channels through which you will be bringing in the web traffic. However this is logical correct, but both link will mean the same once the old URL is pointing to the new one.

Even in case of backlinks you can redirect users to new pages by this method.

For example, if I put:

RewriteRule ^(.*)$ website2.com/ [R=301,NC,L]

 query : Re: “Invented” URL parameters This is a question on the best action to take when Google is indexing pages that don't really exist. I have a pretty simple pagination system on a set of news

@Deb1703797

You must be running a script of some sorts that is generating data based on the page number given to it. The sad truth is that whoever designed the script did not take errors into serious consideration.

The script must be edited so that if the page number specified exceeds the actual total number of pages you made for your site (13?) then the output ideally needs to be an HTTP error 404 indicating a page is not found, but since Google already tried to index such fictional pages, then the HTTP error code needs to be changed to error 410 to tell Google that the page is not found and to stop scanning for that specific page.

If you have basic programming experience, then you will be able to correct this issue yourself. Otherwise, you will need to contact the developers of the script you're using of their problem and then you should get a new script that replaces the one you have that will work correctly with your website task.

I wouldn't recommend a redirect (301 or 302) for the fictional pages because no value is being offered and it also slows down the server as a result from search robots scanning the fictional page numbers as well as the new URLs they are redirected to, however if you believe a guest may be trying to access a fictional number, then you may want to include on the error page a link to a valid page.

@Deb1703797

We have an online newsletter platform which consists of multiple interactive 'pages'.

Readers read the newsletter through a web browser, and Google Analytics is installed in the viewer as our analytics backend.

The viewer is a single page app (SPA) and transitions between newsletter pages are done by Javascript.

We use the 'Average time on page' metric in Google Analytics to give our publishers an idea of how long their newsletter is being read for. It was typically around the 4 - 6 minute mark, which would be correct for the audience our publishers push their newsletters out to.

We then introduced per-page stats, where publishers can get an idea of how many 'views' each of the pages in their newsletter is getting. We use Google Analytics event tracking for this.

We set the event category to Page, event action to view, and the event label to the page ID from the database. Every time a reader clicks through to a page, it sends an event to Google Analytics. Then when the publisher wants to get their stats, our app queries Google Analytics to get the total number of Page views for each page ID.

The problem we have is after we introduced this event tracking, our average time on page has skyrocketed across all newsletters. It's gone from about 4 - 6 minutes to upwards of 1 hour.

I'm not really sure where to start fixing this issue, so I'm hoping someone will have some ideas.

Thanks

A client is having problems with 301 redirects producing 404 Error messages. They previously had a WP site, but decided to change it to an HTML one. They are using the same domain name, and hosting is with the same webhost - with a change from WP hosting to a VPS. The redirects in the .htaccess file are in this format:

Redirect 301 /double-glazing-information/double-glazing-resources example.com/how-double-glazing-works.html

The WP account has been deleted, together with the WP site files, so the pages no longer exist. We simply want to catch any bookmarking or linking to the old pages, and redirect them to the relevant page on the HTML site.

Typing example.com/double-glazing-information/double-glazing-resources (the old WP page) into my browser produces the 404 Error:

The requested URL /double-glazing-information/double-glazing-resources was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

What are we doing wrong?

Further info:

Both the old site and new site are/were with the same host (Dreanhost). We were advised that we had to shut down the old WP account, before the same domain could be included in the VPS account. So we closed the account, and deleted the files.
However, we DO have a Backup Buddy copy of the old WP site.
The .htaccess file reads like this. Only the first 6 or so pages are listed here due to a posting limitation of 8 links. My email is envirofriendly(at)gmail(dot)com if anyone wants the full .htaccess contents, or further discussion.

I think you should concentrate on your content for now and apply when you have as Stephen mentioned 50 pages. I think you should also wait until you get some decent number of visitors. The type of content also plays a big part on getting approved by Adsense. And even after that you dont get approved by Adsense then there are other ways to monetize like Affiliates and paid promotions.

@Deb1703797

There's no way of knowing if someone using device B actually first found your website on device A. This is the fatal flaw of affiliate marketing, and the networks really have little incentive to do anything about it.... which they probably can't anyway.

I find it incredible that your are an honest web merchant who wants to honestly reward his affiliates. Wow, wonders never cease!! The trouble is that most merchants (and for that matter affiliate platforms) are only too happy to "lose" the contact with the "first click" or prime mover of an internet sale. In such cases either no affiliate commission is paid (great from the merchant's point of view) , or else the commission goes to the affiliate network (great from the network's point of view) as they "don't know" which affiliate to reward, so keep the full commission for themselves instead of splitting it with an affiliate.

The trouble is that this dilemma is in most cases insoluble unless the purchaser already accomplishes the first stage of a sale on the first visit, and then returns via a ticket number. Otherwise, except with some synced devices, there's no way of knowing if someone using device B actually first found your website on device A.

It looks like you probably setup the forbidden error document with 404 instead of 403. But unless you were to show us your .htaccess setup, it will be difficult for us to help you.

In regard to returning 404 instead of 403, I do that a lot. That's a way to not give away the fact that certain pages or directories exist. Say I have a "secret" path that only administrators can access, no one needs a 403 because no one except a very few people who can administrate the site and they probably need to log in before they can access that area of the site.

In your case, though, it may be less of a good idea. But the truth is that /images if not forbidden. It is just that you do not have a default index.html so returning 404 is probably better because a path such as /images/eiffel-tower.jpg would also be forbidden if the root directory is forbidden (at least with my logic.)

With a CNAME, it will work too if you have a domain with the correct IP address. So say you define a sub domain strikingly.mysite.com and set that to the strikingly IP address:

The good thing with using a CNAME is that if the IP changes, you can change it in one location and all the other references get changed automatically. It's like having a DNS variable...
