By default Illustrator creates a PDF Compatible File. Not a PDF file. The default settings will create a .ai file. The .ai file that it creates, when "Create PDF compatible file" is checked is then able to be opened by Acrobat and viewed as a PDF.

@Correia448

I believe it's just called an overlay.

You can achieve this effect by placing a black layer over top of your photo and changing the opacity until you get the level of dark you'd like. Works well with other colours than black too.

Changing the blending mode on the layer can add to it as well.

@Correia448

In my experience, an eBrochure is usually a digital version of a brochure that we have developed for print. This is not always the case, more and more we are designing and creating brochures for our clients with only digital distribution in mind.

The eBrochures that we produce are typically PDF's with varying degrees of interactivity and multimedia included. That interactivity could include as little as linking a table of contents to the corresponding section of the brochure. But they can also include video and interactive items like 3D models and page transitions like page flips.

For most clients, when they request a eBrochure, they just want a digital version of the brochure you're creating, to use on their website or to email to clients. You can use the additional interactivity as an up-sell in most cases and charge more than you would for just a flat PDF copy.

I am fancying up the output of one frame of my simulation. In particular, I decided to draw out a relevant background chemical. I used Cairo to execute about the only approach I am familiar with for such a problem: divide up the background into a fine mesh, and calculate the alpha (representing the strength of the chemical in a particular box) at each box separately. Here's what the background alone looks like when zoomed out:

And when zoomed in:

There are around 270k paths, each with 4 nodes. Total file size of the background is around 70 MB.

Simplifying paths doesn't do anything, because the paths are already super simple (just a box). I am hesitant to rasterize (which is about the only option I know of right now), so I wonder: are any other options?

In this video tutorial the designer is able to create concentric circles by clicking within center of the current circle and dragging out a new circle.

The only way I can achieve this is by first turning the circles into paths and then clicking within them. However the video author is able to skip this somewhow. Thoughts?

 query : Re: Sketch 'Resize to Fit' is disabled but my content still gets resized I have a symbol with text + an arrow and resize to fit is disabled however when I resize it the arrow still gets messed

@Correia448

You'll want to do two things:

Set the text to be pinned to the top and left within the Resizing section of the right-hand inspector pane.

Then set the triangle to be pinned to the top and right, and enable Fix Width and Fix Height. This will ensure it stays the same height and width, no matter the size of your symbol.

The Result

A symbol that can be resized to any size you'd like and the triangle will stay the same size, shape, and absolute position relative to the symbol's dimensions.

But what if …

But what if you need another dropdown with a different size text and triangle?

Well, you can either:

Create a new symbol of a different size. You could keep the arrow the same size and make the text smaller (or visa versa).

Or use the same symbol and use the Scale option (and only the scale option). Adjusting the height and width manually won't scale things appropriately. That said, the text and the arrow will be scaled down at the same ratio — which might not be what you're looking for.

My client gave me a set of 13 icons to use in some print and web materials that I am designing for an event. They are simple one color icons with a sketchy kind of look, and the original file they gave me was an .ai. The problem is, any time I try to work with them, Illustrator moves really, really, really slowly. I click on the icons and it take a full 5 seconds to select them. I try to move them and it takes 15-20 seconds for Illustrator to register the move. This is making the design process unbearably frustrating. Any ideas on why Illustrator is struggling with them? What can I do to make it run faster? I have not had any other performance issues, so I'm sure it's the icons. I wouldn't use them, but my client specifically requested that I implement them in the designs.

Here are some of the icons:

@Correia448

Check the default application settings in your OS to see what application is set to open the file you are placing into Photoshop.

Preview converts Postscript files (.ps, .eps, .pdf) to PDF for previewing.

So if you have Preview set to open .eps files, it will convert them to PDF. This would be why your Smart Object is opening as a PDF.

To check the default application settings on a Mac:

Right Click (CRTL+Click) a file of the format you wish to check
Select "Get Info"
Under "Open With" choose the application you want to handle the file format.
Press Change All... to change the preference for all files of that format.

Ofcourse, if your Smart Object was a PDF to begin with, that also explains why it's opening as a PDF.

 query : Re: How to turn off overprint in Indesign? I have a brochure that was sent to printing and the printer staff told me that I need to have the overprint turned off for some black text on a square

@Correia448

You can check and manually set the overprint of an object in InDesign through the Attributes Panel.

InDesign by default does prioritize black to overprint (unless you tell it not to in preferences), but it prioritizes overprinting of Spot colours (Silver in your case) over process colours (CMYK) and doesn't overprint black on top of a spot colour unless you tell it specifically to do so.

It's best to manually set the objects you want to overprint. Otherwise InDesign will just knock out the area you want to print black.

Window > Output > Attributes

Then you can toggle the overprint of an object in the panel.

@Correia448

Seeing that responsive emails are tricky fickle beasts, it might be best to consider an alternative:

Plain text.

I know, I know — this is the Graphic Design Stack Exchange. How could I propose such blasphemy?

Simple. They just work: blog.hubspot.com/marketing/plain-text-vs-html-emails-data
But like anything, test this hypothesis with your own customer base.

To summarize the HubSpot article (who, to their credit, even recognize the irony of publishing these stats):

HTML emails reduce open rates
HTML emails reduce clickthrough rates
Filters set up by email providers can divert commercial emails from users' main inboxes
Gmail will not automatically show images from unknown senders
Plain text might be perceived as less of a time commitment to read, or perhaps people really don't care for design in email.

And while it might mean a designer has one less task to do (or is out of a job), the results should be the determining factor if you were to use this approach.

@Correia448

For a flexible button that leverages the Resizing feature within Sketch, scroll down to the Tips & Tricks section of this article by Michael Fouquet.

Relevant part of the article:

Doesn’t currently handled nested symbol resizing very well. To get around this, we usually create what we call “spacing blocks”. An example of where this might be necessary is buttons; you drop in a button, give it more text than the default and suddenly the padding is out of whack. For this, we have a show/hide spacing block symbol that drops in semi-transparent “blocks”. The designer now just needs to resize the button until the blocks line up.

@Correia448

This is pretty easy:

Put all the objects in a single desired position on circle (point 1). (The fastest way to do this is to create a smaller circle on the center of the anchor of big circle, and then align objects by the selected smaller circle).
Divide number of objects by the number of degrees in circle - this is the amount of degrees that will need to be between the elements on path.
Now select all objects and unselect the one that is already in good position.
Choose Rotate Tool (key: R) and with alt pressed click on the center of the circle (you may need to enable guides to see them)
Type calculated degrees in the Rotate Tool modal.
Repeat 3, 4 and 5 for other objects.

It is very flexible: you can have more/less objects, you can spread them only on a part of the circle (you divide smaller degree than 360), or you can move the objects closer/further from the center.

I am thinking something like this:

For existing files:

Open the file.
Create a copy layer to work with keeping the original there untouched at all times.
Create a background layer that all cuts get pasted to.
Work on your copied layer...

That sort of thing?

I have stumbled through a few operations at various times guided by web advice but I'm thinking this is the bit I'm missing that stops me figuring it out for myself....

kinda lost... when looking at 'how to' manuals they always quickly get too specific and never give me this basic outline design philosophy if that's what I could call it...

copying from one inkscape document to another pastes as a bitmap. Cut&paste doesn't. So the workaround is to duplicate (Ctrl-D), then cut&paste.
on a Mac, cut&paste still doesn't work because of a bug with X11. The workaround is to modify the settings of X11: preferences ->

 query : Re: What is the name of a squircle with three, five, six or more corners? I know that the second shape is a squircle, but what are the other shapes called? Is there an actual name for them?

@Correia448

The term 'squircle' is understood because there is enough of each of the component words remaining, and it's caught on as it's nice and short, and fun to say. The same can't be said for trircle and the other contractions after that style.

A common way to distinguish between members of a family that differ only in some number of something, at least in mathematics, is to use a numeric prefix.

My name for the three sided version would be a 3-squircle.

Part of the benefit of this technique is that I know everybody reading this answer, without exception, will be able to construct the unique name of any other rounded polygon squircle-like shape, regardless of the number of sides.

There is obviously a glaring inconsistency. A squircle has 4 sides. However, the fact of that inconsistency indicates that we are using the term squircle in a different but related way, to describe the family of shapes, rather than the precise shape. The '3-' prefix, being so clear, obviously overrides the implied order of the shape.

The numerical inconsistency, and the fact that it's glaring, also inject a bit of levity into the name, it's fun.

If you were communicating about your design, you might use the term 4-squircle at some point, to emphasise its slight shift in meaning.

Once the term squircle has been freed of the need to communicate the order of the shape, perhaps a new shape name could be constructed, like polyround, or circlegon - remember it's got to be a single word, not too many syllables, syllabic stress compatible with being easy to say, with roundness and sidedness clearly implied - a tough ask. So would I use '4-polyround' over 'squircle' or even '4-squircle'? I think not. 'Sidedround'? Maybe ... not. 'Roundygon'? Hmmm, maybe.

Enabling guide-snapping, you may for example drop a new guide onto an existing one, double click and then move it by a precise amount.

You also have Path to guides (shift-G), which converts an object into the boundary guides.

I tried making one that is identical, everything is good except for one thing; I can not achieve the same effect as the one in this image. You see, each word and shape -including the banner downwards- has a thick dark blue stroke and the area between each word and shape is colored with the same stroke color and it never goes out of the line stroke line, just the background space area between the shapes. Even the lines of the background area (dark blue) between the last word in white and the next shape runs smoothly with nice curves.
