: Re: How did Pink get associated with feminine beauty to begin with? Women's History Month began this week, and gender equality is booming more than ever. Many brands are attempting to show support.
Since the 19th century, the colors pink and blue have been used as gender signifiers, particularly for infants and young children. The current tradition in the United States (and an unknown number of other countries) is "pink for girls, blue for boys".
Prior to 1940, two conflicting traditions coexisted in the U.S., the current tradition, and its opposite, i.e., "blue for girls, pink for boys". This was noted by Paoletti (1987, 1997, 2012).
Since the 1980s, Paoletti's research has been misinterpreted and has evolved into an urban legend: that there was a full reversal in 1940, prior to which the only tradition observed was the opposite of the current one.
The reality is that "pink for girls, blue for boys" has existed continuously since at least the 1820s, while "blue for girls, pink for boys" is only recorded between 1889 and 1941
The earliest reference they point to, is 1823 from Haarlem, Netherlands
Ladies Childbirth, she said, is announced in this manner, and when the pincushion is pink background, this is a sign of the coming into this world a little girl, while the blue background pelotte announces that it is a boy,
~Athanase Garnier (translated) Source (in french)
However, It really started in the US or other western cultures in the 1920's and by the 1950's "pink was strongly associated with femininity but to an extent that was "neither rigid nor universal" as it later became" source
In 2008, the Breast Cancer Awareness used the color pink to "convey empowerment of women." which more strengthened the pink - feminine association.
Alecia Beth Moore (commonly known as P!NK) an American singer (and self proclaimed feminist) chose the stage name P!nk (read Pink). There are many speculations as to why she chose it, but that contributed as well.
: Re: Convert shapes and lines into a single outline Coming back to Illustrator after many years away, and I seem to have forgotten how to do what seems really elementary. Forgive my quick hand sketches...
Although pathfinder will definitely work, using the Shapebuilder Tool (Shift+M) will probably be much simpler.
Just Select All and Click+Drag over areas to merge. Then select the area to delete and remove it (see included GIF)

All of a sudden I can't type width and height of a marquee in the top bar. The document is a standard JPG, no quick mask modus, (single) layer is normal and unlocked. The Fixed Ratio and Size styles are not affected; it's only the Normal style that seems to be afflicted. I've restarted Photoshop several times, and even the computer itself, but to no avail. Any suggestion?

Use a clipping mask. (rather than pathfinder, as pathfinder is very "destructive"... I used to always use pathfinder for just about everything, but anything I did was permanent, whereas Clipping masks allow me to go back and change things.)
Clone your rainbow (so that you have 2 of them)
Select one star and one rainbow then Right Click → Make Clipping Mask
Then select the other star and other rainbow and do the same thing.

TL;DR I want my pattern to be centered with the (dashed) outer circle, but I want the text to stay at the same position in correlation with the pattern/circle.
I want the pattern to be centered to the outer circle, but whilst keeping the text at the same distance in correlation with the pattern circle. (almost like a key object - but within a group) so that it will move the text with the shape, but not consider it in the equation while aligning.
This can apply not just to text, but any "other object" to be left out of the equation.
(I do not want to be remaking the shape or measuring and manually replacing the other object)
: Re: Illustrator Isometric scaling I created a grid and started my design/illustration on it. Deep in the project I realize that some object are supposed to be bigger in size. So first thought
You would have to do each side manually (especially if trying to make it follow the grid).
What you do is, use the Direct Selection Tool (A) and select all the points that would have to move in that specific direction and then move just those points (it's a bit hard to explain, so I've included a screen capture)
You see how I selected all the anchor points that would need to move UP, and then dragged it up. Same thing for sides.
I've made circles and arrows on what I think which Anchor points need to move where in your case etc .
: Re: How to protect your illustrator file while sending it as a PDF and is there a way to deliver a PDF version that does not contain the vector artwork? Is there a way to send your Illustrator
Save the AI file as a high res JPG
Open the JPG (into Illustrator)
Resize the artboard to actual size
Save this file to a PDF
The PDF is now FLAT and an un-editable PDF.

: Re: Is it possible to generate a gradient from color swatches? I am trying to generate two gradients using color swatches in Adobe Illustrator. It took me a very long time to find out that it's
Apply your gradient to a shape (using the 2 colors)
Now go to Object → Expand and set it to the amount of colors you want (I did 15)
Right click → Ungroup and Right Click → Release clipping mask
Now click the new folder Icon in swatches panel (Window → Swatches) and make sure to select "from artwork" and it will make a folder of swatches using the colors from your gradient. (you will have chosen earlier exactly how many)

: Re: Selection tool height and width setting disappeared in Illustrator Before when I used the Selection tool I had some boxes in the top toolbar where I could set x and y positioning and width/height.
It must've gotten hidden accidentally.
Click on the 3 lines drop-down on the far right and make sure that Shapes is checked.
As John pointed out that the OP may have actually been reffering to the Transform Panel
If you are trying to move the shape, you would just have to click on Transform and that will open a panel where you can set the X and Y position of the path, you can also resize it from within that panel

I went to Object->Clipping Mask->Release but they are grayed out.

I have tried highlighting and going back to Object->Clipping Mask->Release but they're still all grayed out.

Given shapes like these, which contain just Arcs and lines, I want to round all its corners with a certain radius. I know the vertices of the lines & arcs these shapes.
I can round the corners of a polygon (when two lines meet to form a corner), but can't figure out how to round a corner formed by an Arc and a Line
I used this post to round the corners of polygon - stackoverflow.com/questions/24771828/algorithm-for-creating-rounded-corners-in-a-polygon
Could you please share a code snippet, or just explain/list the math/algorithm for achieving this? Thanks!

TL:DR Smart guides aren't accurate - even though the snap, (end up causing more problems in the long run) is there a way to fix it?
Maybe there are some settings that I'm missing (need to be changed)
I use my smart guides all the time (and am overall pleased with them). I do have my issues with it, as explained here:
A lot of times, when I'm trying to make a bunch of triangles like this:
Done by making a triangle, cloning, flipping, rotating etc. Repeat until full
(Perfect) Snapping using Smart Guides
Ends up looking likebetween the triangles (Outline Mode)
Now I personally (with a strong attention to detail) will notice that there is something off after making just 1 or 2 triangles (Even before outline mode... strokes look oh so slightly thicker/off)
And then I check in outline mode... and sure enough:
Notice the line spaces (and this is in outline mode, so if I didn't notice it before, now it's sitting right in front of my nose)
The way I (seemingly) "fixed" the first image was by adding in a thick stroke outline so that masks out the difference, however, in a lot of my cases I don't want to have a stroke at all (and then you really notice the problems).
: Re: In Sketch, how can I resize text within a group? In Sketch, I have a simple title, subtitle, and some rects on the left and right. When I resize the group, I would expect it to scale up
You can increase the text including objects inside the group by using the scale property.
: Re: Inkscape to trace bitmap with 4k+ colors I'm trying to convert (trace) this image to an svg file: Full size Image I run Path > Trace Bitmap, 256 colors, no smooth, no stack, remove bg,
AFAIK the vectorization process in inkscape is just a color quantization + n call to potrace.
I guess the color reduction first stage is done using median-cut algorithm which is prone to color quantization error.
So I think you won't be able to preserve the colors while tracing in inkscape.
Maybe you could try the script @ www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=30972
which is a shell script that uses imagemagick to sort the colors by area in your image and then launch a potrace on a mask for every color then combine the n svgs.

Hide the guidelines and the cursor shouldn't snap anymore.

The way these paths are placed would mean that you can't 'join' them, which would be ideal if you want to keep the icon as stroked paths.
The solution is, like Billy Kerr pointed out, in the 'duplicate' post (it's not really a duplicate, but rather is the solution to your problem). You'll need to convert to outlines (Layer -> Convert to outlines) and then use the pathfinding options (union, substract, intersect, difference), depending on what exactly you'll be trying to achieve.
: Re: 3ds max 2014 - import FBX from Maya 2017 then see nothing According to Transfering a 3ds Max scene to Maya and vice versa Export the scene file as fbx and import the fbx into the other
Turn out the problem here is because of the file version of FBX file format.
To make the 3Ds max 2014 read the fbx exported from Maya 2017, we must edit the export settings in Maya 2017 a bit.
In Maya 2017:
File > Export All... (click the setting box)
In "Export All Options" Dialog, click "Edit preset..." > "Edit export preset" dialog pops up."
Set "Advanced Options" > "FBX File Format" > "Version" = "FBX 2014/2015" like in the image below

my departments are setting up some new file naming conventions. We use a CMD system to autogenerate a number of folders from a dynamically created Job Number. Currently, we have the following structure
DOCUMNETS for InDesign and PDF outputs
SCANS_LOGOS for Indesing links / photoshop / ai files a
CLIENT_ORIGINAL for Word docs supplied by clients and used for text in inDesing
In my mind, this is an antiquated/inadequate filing system as Adobe is pushing towards alternative workflows.
Below are a few modern workflow scenarios:
-An InDesign document might have links saved from a CC Library (should we save a link to the library in the job?
-Photohsop user might be using artboards and exporting images from photoshop using prefixes
Illustrator exports assets as well as artboards.
Does anyone have a good workflow for print /they could suggest

I create artwork on Photoshop and occassionally print this artwork on physical products. That said, I save all of my artwork in PNG since is of better quality and has transparency.
Shen you save a PNG on Photoshop (not Save for Web as 300ppi needs to be retained), I am prompted with a small window that gives me the options for compression.
I am presented with "None/Fast" and "Smallest/Slow". When I take use "None/Fast", my file size is around 300Mb. However, when I use "Smallest/Slow", my file size drops down to about 3-5Mb. This is a tremendous file size reduction.
Afterwards I open both of the saved files (the 300Mb and 5Mb), and they are identical on screen and both have 300ppi retained.
What's the catch here? It seems to good to be true to have the file size compress to this tiny size without any visible quality loss (I'm zooming right in, no difference). Thank you.
